What are surgery straws?

I looked up “Fun Dip” on Wikipedia, and the first sentence of the second paragraph says, “Fun Dip is similar to fellow Wonka product Pixy Stix, but sold in small pouches, rather than paper or plastic surgery straws.”

What are surgery straws? And do they have any application other than being used with candy?

Surgery straws are just really long, wide, thick straws. Plastic tubes, basically.
